Uh-oh, here come another all-female lo-fi group... I jest of course, but here's a band that we might just need. Novella are a new(ish) London based group made up of Hollie Warren, Sophy Hollington and Suki Sou.
"The Things You Do" reminds me of two bands I wouldn't exactly say are too comparable. Canadian favourites No Joy and Smoke Fairies. The latter due to the start, with some intricate guitar-work and the former more apparent, with reverb-drenched guitar dirge noise that simmers throughout and ends with a big percussion-pummelling finale. It's pretty special.
"Oh Brian" combines an alluring cocktail of sumptuous melodic fuzz with nonchalant vocals, a gorgeous airy haze washes through and it make me go all warm inside.
"Beach Fatigue" is the most laid-back of the three track's on their soundcloud, taking its title quite literally with its chilled-out summers day vibe. Luscious, dreamy vocal harmonies and some wonderful guitar work. Quite delicious.
Novella play 1234 festival this weekend (shame I'm away as the line-up is pretty spectacular) and The Garage on 21st July, more to follow I'm sure.
The Things You Do by Novella.
Oh Brian by Novella.
Little bit stupid to have (even a minor) whinge about the prospect of more female bands. Clearly women are a little unrepresented in music, so they should be embraced rather than moaned about.
ReplyDeleteThe comment was pretty tongue-in-cheek... If you read this blog often then you'd see that women in music are more than equally represented (understatement).
