One of the many posts I've been meaning to publish for a while now, her appearance in the finals of the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Contest (won by Treetop Flyers) was a welcome catalyst for my memory, Emily and The Woods is the project of London based Emily Woods. (The Woods I can assume comes from her brother and father who play with her). She has released one EP, 'Never Play' with another one penned for early May.
"Never Play" is the perfect introduction to Emily's wonderful melancholic folk music. The first thing that strikes you is her beautiful voice, strikingly warm with a bluesy-soulful edge, then the gentle, exquisitely crafted melodies and introspective lyrics that belie her youthful age, "I Can't" is another delicate, intelligent and stunning track.
Perhaps not your Saturday night get ready music, but if you are in the mood for some beautiful alt-folk, perhaps for a lazy Sunday afternoon with a warm burning log-fire beside you and a few books at hand (and a glass of malt if you are that way inclined), Emily and the Woods will be right up your street.
Her second EP is launched with a gig on 4th May at The North London Tavern - tickets.
