Happy New Year #3 - High Sea

Happy New Year is an aptly titled act for the first real post of the year, Eleanor Logan's previous two singles 'Gold Medallion' and 'Hotel / Twins' have been featured on this blog over the past six months and "High Sea", Eleanor's contribution to a split 7" with Australian post-punk outfit Nite Fields is a worthy addition to her catalogue. The record is released next week January 9th via Lost Race Records - limited to just 150 copies it's available for 8 / 10 AUS dollars with an email to lostracerecords@gmail.com.

"High Sea" is based around a beautiful, atmospheric bass-line with repetitive key strokes and Eleanor's light, ethereal vocal. It's haunting, intoxicating and completely wonderful.

Nite Fields' side is excellent too, the Brisbane four piece are a new band to me but "Come Down" combines deep muffled vocals with dark, edgy guitars and booming drums. Another atmospheric track though, where the HNY side is hypnotic and wistful, Nite Fields' is moody and uneasy - you can find more about them on their facebook page - a compelling release to start your year off with. They play four Australian dates together next week which you can find more about on any of the above links.

Eleanor Logan returns with her second Happy New Year release next month, "Gold Medallion" b/w "And... Begin!" is released August 3rd via Crikey! Records (limited to 500, pre-orders with hand-written lyrics - buy here).

Following where her last release"Twins / Hotel" left off, "Gold Medallion's" sound is enormous for what is basically a solo project (although she is accompanied by some musicians for live performances). Propulsive programming, clattering percussion, atmospheric drones and Eleanor's silky soft vocal. Utterly transfixing.

Happy New Year / Adult Themes - New Music "Introducing"

I think this is the first ever time I've done two bands on the same post but it works okay I think.

Happy New Year is the solo project of Eleanor Logan, a member of Adult Themes (I didn't know this until after I started this post, otherwise I'd probably have given the band a space of their own previously). I discovered HNY thanks to her support slot with JMTIL favourites No Joy, I couldn't make the show because I was in Barcelona, but the name stood-out and here we are...

At the back end of last year Eleanor released her debut Happy New Year release 'Hotel / Twins' via Crikey Records (who also released the now sold out Adult Themes debut 7") and is limited to 300 7" Vinyl. "Twins" with pounding drums and scratching guitar hissing along, the droning grunge-crunk sounds causing general mayhem over Eleanor's light and echoed vocal. "Hotel" is more experimental and equally impressive, with electronic glitches and sporadic noises played over a looping, rhythmic beat. It's a pretty fantastic debut, she played in London last night, I imagine it was great - I think it was the end of her UK trip, which is a pity but hopefully she'll be back and not playing when I'm out of the country and on Wednesday's!

The Adult Themes 7" 'Four Fires / Young Bodies' came out last July, and both tracks follow a more garage-rock style, brief in duration they are urgent, aggressive and noisy. The drumming is an absolute stand-out on both fuzzed-up numbers which call to be played loud.
