Lanterns on the Lake's beautiful music has been the most played in my whole library this past week, it's very easy to say that I've completely fallen for the delicate wonder of their tracks, even more so since their three EP's dropped through my mailbox.
You can listen / buy / download them on the links above. Do so, you won't regret it. I really am excited to hear what is next from them.
Hazel from the band has been kind enough to answer a few questions for me, in what I hope will become a regular feature of the site. The current aim, in very loose form is for me to ask artists who make music that I like, what they like and more...
Which artists do you feel have influenced your work and continue to do so?
Lots and lots of artists influence Lanterns On The Lake but not in a direct or obvious way. We are influenced individually from a wide variety of artists from Godspeed You Black Emperor to Neil Young but because these influences all go into the big Lanterns melting pot they are quite subtle.
I also think that you can be just as influenced by music that you dislike because you can be moved to make something in reaction to it and the opposite of it. When I see some dreadful uninspiring guitar band with daft haircuts and little substance I’m driven to make the music that I need to hear.
Which song do you wish you had written?
This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) by Talking Heads.
If you were to curate an ATP event, who would you want to invite along?
The Cure, Yuck, The National, Epic 45, Rachel’s, Neil Young, Explosions in the Sky, Interpol..... Can I invite dead people or bands that are no longer going? Well I’m going to... Talking Heads, Nirvana, Hood.
Of your own songs, what song are you proudest of?
Hmmm, ok maybe at the moment I’m most proud of a song called Sapsorrow that was on the Lungs Quicken b-side. I’m proud of it because I can’t really play piano at all and that is the first song I’ve written on piano.
Recommend to me, an artist that isn’t getting the attention they deserve.
I’m in love with Yuck at the moment and I think everyone else should be.
