I've been raving about Caitlin to anyone that will listen for a little while, her debut EP "Dead Flowers" and latest single “For The Rabbits” highlighted the Nashville based singer as a future star, last Friday I finally got her album “Own Side Now” and after listening to it over the weekend and on my way to work, I can happily say that I'm not disappointed, not one bit.
Caitlin has a brilliant voice and the album is just wonderful throughout. She has moulded traditional country music with a modern and appealing style that is a guaranteed to appeal to the wider audience. Enjoy the small shows (dates follow below) whilst you can, it's going to be Shepherd's Bush before long.
The title track “Own Side” is a heart-warming and honest ballad, "who's gonna want me when // I'm just somewhere you've been // who's gonna want me now // and who’s gonna take me home // such honest and sincere lyrics make Own Side an instant loved track.
“For the Rabbits” is a song that I've already commented about, it's pop sounds made it the perfect introduction to the album, a track of epic proportions. As is "Things Change", another mighty, country ballad that even at almost six minutes in length, is not one second over-long.
"Spare Me", an up-tempo track that is guaranteed to have venues and halls dancing before summer is out.
“Sinful Wishing Well” is just outstanding, a hauntingly gorgeous track and a certain highlight on this LP of genuine delight. There isn’t a single song which feels undeserving of its position on the album, to repeat myself one final time, "Own Side Now" is a wonderful debut and will give Caitlin the success her songwriting deserves.
8.9 / 10
Make sure you also buy “T-Shirt” the B-side to “For The Rabbits” A reworking of a track off Caitlin's debut Dead Flowers EP, but a fantastic version.
