Wildbirds & Peacedrums #4 - Live at The Lexington Review

Until Thursday whenever I am asked who are the best live act I've seen, I quote either Prince, The Joy Formidable or Editors who never fail to disappoint me.

On Thursday this might just have changed. I was in utter awe at the brilliance of the performance of Mariam Wallentin and Andreas Werliin, Wildbirds & Peacedrums.

I am somewhat of a late comer, only discovering the duo with the release of their Retina EP around May time, therefore this was the first time I'd seen them live. It will not be the last.

The opening was unbelievable, "There Is No Light" blew me away like no song I can remember, the intensity of Werliin's drumming combined with the strength of the vocal delivery made the performance above breathtaking.

"Rivers" (read my review) the duo's sublime and beautifully crafted third album outings were limited to the "Iris" proportion, seemingly saving "Retina" for the choir show in November (featuring The Roundhouse Experimental Choir at Union chapel - ticket link below).

Mariam's extraordinary voice brought the crowd to silence with nonchalant ease, if you looked around during the performance you were met with the sight of dropped jaws, smiles and sheer delight. The London crowd were lapping up every bit of it.
Goosebumps return during the climax of "My Heart" before the two disappear, called back to the stage for a encore which consists of a cover of "Wild Is The Wind" and "The Way Things Go".

The only sour point being when a "technician" pulled out the microphone in the middle of a song, Mariam looked completely aghast, as if awoken from a trance. The two soon found their rhythm again and all was forgotten, the crowd it seems were intoxicated in the same hypnotic trance.

Joyous.

Get tickets to see them at Union Chapel in November - they'll be a choir then too, it will not dissapoint!
