A feature that interests me quite a bit (given that this blog is basically a list of my musical interests) is what inspires artists that I like, I've a few more of these lined up and hopefully by seeing who artists making some great music influences are / who they are currently listening to, I'll be able to discover even more great music.
I recently did a little Introducing post on Manchester Musician Pierre Hall's solo project Golden Glow, since Pierre was kind enough to answer some questions for me. Straight into them below;
What inspired you to start making music?
Early on, proper pop stars like MJ and the Beatles. All the Motown stuff and 60s girl groups.
Anything to try and capture a feeling, or encapsulate an emotion that would be there forever. They were my first reference points.
As I got older it was more of an art thing, I got into books and poems an stuff.. Being an artist just seemed to be the only real truthful thing you could do.
Of your own songs, which are you proudest of and what track is the most fun to play live?
'Adore Me' is the song I am most proud of at the moment. It's always great when you set out to try and capture in a few minutes the exact thing you are feeling, the exact idea you want to portray, and feel that it works. It's one of the rare occasions, for me, where I felt that I did.
Live, 'At A Loss' is my favourite. It's just really loud.
Which artists do you feel have influenced your work and continue to do so?
At the moment, with the Golden Glow stuff, definitely Felt, Jonathan Richman, The Velvet Underground, Dion, Television, Radiohead... but also writers. I like Fitzgerald, Keats, Celine, and especially Fante.
Which song do you wish you had written?
'Runaround Sue' by Dion & the Belmonts.
What's the best gig you've attended in recent memory? Or a band that you’ve played with who impressed you?
A couple recently. Yuck were great. Just a young, great guitar band playing great songs. Bill Callahan was amazing too. Such an intense performer.
There's an instrumental krautrock-band from Manchester called Plank! who are absolutely unbelievable. A proper musicians band, they're pretty captivating live.
If you were to curate an ATP event, who would you want to invite along?
Hmm.. probably all of the above, as well as - Moldy Peaches, Whitest Boy Alive, Wild Nothing, Bowie, Comet Gain, Life Without Buildings, Television Personalities, The Feelies, Pulp....
Recommend an artist that isn’t getting the attention they deserve.
Definitely 'Boxed In' ( http://www.myspace.com/boxedinuk ) . Its really cool electronic music . Dead glitchy but soulful too.. Try starting with 'No Joke' . Its 4am-party-still-going music. It's so well produced too. The guy behind it, Oli Bayston is kinda an up-and-coming-producer. He used to be in a criminally-overlooked Manchester band called Keith. Check it out.
