Russian Red #4 - Casper

Facebookrussianred.es

I've long been a fan of Russian Red, featuring her on this blog a few times previously over the past three years and attending her only London show to date a couple of years back at Union Chapel, a delicious performance that highlighted the perfect marriage of Lourdes' rich, luxurious voice and exquisite songcraft. Armed with songs such as "Fuerteventura" and "I Hate You But I Love You" combining bright and breezy pop hooks with beautiful, wistful balladry, it's a sound that still hasn't quite reached the audience it deserves here.

The good news is Russian Red is back and back with a track which I think might just be her best yet, "Casper" (stream below) is taken from her third album Agent Cooper (due February 25th) and it's immediately a different beast from the Lourdes' earlier work. Highlighting a fuller, expanded sound that sets the pulse racing with runaway guitar and driving percussion swirling around a hushed vocal before breaking for the most swoonsome chorus full of syrupy vocals and nostalgic melody.

The album goes straight onto the must buy list.
